My Story: Why I Chose Senior Care
My name is Katie Wasserman and over the past five years, I have dedicated my life and career to serving seniors in a way that goes far beyond traditional caregiving. As the owner of Seniors Helping Seniors, my mission is simple but deeply meaningful to me: to help older adults maintain their independence, dignity, and connection to others through compassionate, relationship-based care.
My professional journey didn’t start in senior care. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Marketing with a minor in Business Administration from Texas State University and later pursued additional studies in Communication Disorders at the University of Houston. Early in my career, I worked in marketing, education, and business development roles that taught me how to build relationships, communicate effectively, and solve problems in fast-paced environments.
One of my most formative roles was in business development within the oil and gas industry, where I managed high-value accounts, grew territory revenue, and worked closely with clients to develop strategic solutions. While I was successful in that space, I felt a growing desire to do work that had a more direct and meaningful impact on people’s lives.
That desire is what led me into senior care—and ultimately to building my business.
When I became part of Seniors Helping Seniors, I immediately connected with the model. What stood out to me was the idea that seniors could care for other seniors. It made so much sense—who better to understand the challenges, emotions, and experiences of aging than someone who is walking a similar path? This approach creates a level of comfort, trust, and genuine companionship that is difficult to replicate in traditional caregiving models.
Over the last five years, I have worked closely with seniors and their families, and what I have learned is that care is about so much more than helping with daily tasks. It’s about connection. It’s about listening. It’s about showing up consistently and making someone feel seen, valued, and understood.
Many of the seniors I work with are navigating significant life transitions—loss of independence, changes in health, or feelings of isolation. I have made it my mission to ensure they never feel alone in that process. Through my team, we provide not only assistance with everyday needs, but also companionship, conversation, and emotional support. In many cases, our caregivers become trusted friends and extended family members.
One of the most meaningful parts of my work is supporting families. I understand firsthand how overwhelming it can be to care for a loved one while balancing your own responsibilities. My goal is to provide peace of mind—knowing that their loved one is not only safe, but genuinely cared for. I work closely with each family to understand their unique situation and create a plan that meets their needs with compassion and reliability.
Another aspect of my work that I care deeply about is creating opportunities for seniors to stay active and engaged by becoming caregivers themselves. I have seen how empowering it is for older adults to have a sense of purpose, to contribute, and to build relationships. It’s a reminder that aging doesn’t mean stepping back—it can mean stepping into a new and meaningful role.
My background in business development and marketing has helped me grow my company and build strong relationships within the community. I regularly connect with local organizations, healthcare providers, and community groups to educate others about the importance of companionship-based care. I believe that building trust and awareness is key to reaching the families who need us most.
At the same time, I never lose sight of the personal side of what I do. Every client has a story, and I take the time to understand their preferences, personalities, and needs. Matching the right caregiver to the right client is something I take very seriously, because I know how much those relationships matter.
Looking forward, my goal is to continue growing while staying true to the heart of what makes my business special. I want to reach more families, support more seniors, and continue building a model of care that prioritizes dignity, connection, and compassion.
At the end of the day, I believe that everyone deserves to age with respect and support—and I am committed to doing my part to make that a reality.
